
In contrast to peaceful first phase of balloting, several incidents of violence, including an explosion and firing by militants marked the second and final phase of election to the 12th Assam Legislative Assembly; the turnout, however, hovered close to 75 per cent.
At least two incidents of violence were reported from the militancy-ridden Karbi Anglong hill district, where armed rebels triggered off an IED at Howraghat. The impact of the blast was big, but no casualties reported.
In another incident in the same district, militants suspected to be members of the Karbi Longri Liberation Front fired at a polling party that was returning from duty near Borphung under Bokajan police station. One CRPF personnel was injured.
At Nagaon in Central Assam, supporters of the ruling Congress and the Opposition Asom Gana Parishad AGP clashed leaving at least 40 people injured. Considered to be a stronghold of the AGP, Nagaon has among others, former chief minister and break-away AGPP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta contesting against sitting AGP MLA Girindra Kumar Barua.
Prominent contestants for the second phase include two-time former chief minister Mahanta contesting from Barhampur and Nagaon in Central Assam as AGPP candidate, former chief minister and Congress leader Bhumidhar Barman from Barkhetri, AGP chief Brindabon Goswami from Tezpur, rural development minister Ripun Bora and former Speaker Pulakesh Barua.
