Indians remain aggressive: DCC
THE NATION: The Defence Committee of the Cabinet DCC deliberated on security-related matters and reviewed the situation in the region as a result of continued Indian hostilities along the Line of Control and the serious implications of India8217;s nuclear doctrine on Friday. The meeting presided over by Nawaz Sharif was attended by the Ministers for Foreign Affairs, Finance, Information, Kashmir Affairs and Religious Affairs, the three Services Chiefs, the defence and foreign secretaries and other senior officials. The DCC has a four-item agenda, which includes discussions on Kashmir and Indian hostilities, the CTBT, the PM8217;s visit to New York and Afghanistan. An official said the meeting focused on Kashmir and the India8217;s aggressive posture and hostilities with a particular reference to its nuclear doctrine and Pakistan8217;s decision to sign or not to sign the CTBT. Sharif8217;s visit to New York, reportedly already called off, will also be discussed. The DCC noted with concern that the regional situation continues to remain volatile as a result of India8217;s aggressive posture along the LoC, as well as intensified repression and human rights violations inside the Indian held-Kashmir.
Press for plebiscite, back Taliban
THE NATION: From a letter to the editor: Radcliffe awarded Gurdaspur, a Muslim majority district to India, so that Maharaja Kashmir could opt for India. The Mujahideen retaliated and captured the Valley, but Pakistan8217;s non-committal attitude enabled the Indians to land troops as the Srinagar airport was not secured. We agreed to a ceasefire when Pakistani troops were in a dominant position. Successive governments failed to persuade the UN to stick to its commitment to hold a plebiscite on the future of Kashmir. We should press for plebiscite in Kashmir and support the Taliban diplomatically and denounce those whose covert operations inside Afghanistan areresponsible for internecine war. Such a bold stand, momentarily disadvantageous, ultimately shall win us friends and an honourable role in the comity of nations.
