Mumbai, Dec 30: Dalbir Singh Deol of Punjab Police dips the weighing scales a whopping 123 kg, 300 grams. But his claim to fame lies elsewhere. No other Indian has defied earth’s gravity to the extent he has. No other Indian has pushed 202.5 kg of metal mass the National mark Dalbir set this year upright over his head.

Today, at the 52nd men’s and 15th women’s Senior National Weightlifting championships at Kalyan, Dalbir went ballistic. He attempted an unprecedented 207.5 kg in his second and third Clean and Jerk attempts. It was no longer a sport. The rest of the field had given up at 187.5 kg.

Dalbir was merely testing himself, pitting his body against the forces of nature. The forces of nature won.

But Dalbir took all three golds in the 105-plus class, with a 165 kg Snatch and a 200 kg C&J.

Earlier, Amarjeet Singh Sandhu of Railways set a new National mark of 152.5 kg for Snatch in the 105 kg event, while Harpreetpal Singh of Police did likewise in the 94 kg last night, with a snatch of 148 kg. Both were modified age categories.

Railways and Police won the overall men’s and women’s championships respectively, while Ak Pandian (Rlys) and Prathima Kumari (Police) were respectively named best man and woman lifters of the event.
