PUNE, Dec 28: Parties and celebrations to usher in the new year are sure to bring the city and the streets alive. But when almost everyone is out of doors, for the traffic police it is a routine matter. They have a big job on their hands to maintain smooth movement of traffic.

On this night, a high degree of traffic indiscipline makes it a difficult job. All sorts of vehicles choke the roads. While several arrangements are being made for December 31 in view of the public celebrations, the traffic branch has realised that capturing vehicular movement on video film with the objective of forcing people to follow traffic rules, hardly serves any purpose.

Unlike last year, when video shooting of the vehicular traffic was made at most junctions, this year the shooting will be done only at some points, official sources at the traffic branch said. 8220;It becomes very difficult to trace the culprits by video shooting. If a traffic offence has been made, the registration number of the vehicle can be found. However, the vehicle may have been sold by the original owner. Following the cases and submitting them in the court takes more time, quot; the authorities said.

On the other hand, it was easy to nab and punish the offender on the spot, the authorities added. Drunk driving is common on this night and fatal mishaps are common. Despite severe constraints on the manpower, the traffic branch will be at its full strength to ensure smooth vehicular movement. All the traffic signals at over three hundred junctions will function until late night on December 31. The city police will also be making their arrangements for maintaining law and order.
