CAPE TOWN, OCT 14: Pakistan’s military government won’t be permitted to attend the meeting of Commonwealth heads of state in South Africa next month, South African President Thabo Mbeki said on Thursday.
The action would mark one of the strongest moves to isolate Pakistan since the country’s military overthrew the democratically-elected government on Tuesday.
Mbeki, who becomes Commonwealth chairman at the November 12 gathering, pointed out that the group made a commitment in 1991 to defend democratic rule.
"I would imagine for the Commonwealth to be consistent in its views, clearly, I don’t think it would allow that a military government should be represented at the forthcoming heads of government (meeting)," Mbeki told a media briefing here.
