Edmonton, the host city for the 14th IAAF World Half Marathon in 2005, is out to prove itself. The Canadian city is not just geared up but actually in such a state of readiness that they can stage it right now if necessary. With 363 days to go, the hosts are ready with the date, the course and hundreds of volunteers.
A sneak preview of things to expect at the event, just after the conclusion of the New Delhi meet, was an eye-opener. Heading the 25-member delegation is former marathoner Daryl Wilson, the chairman of the organising committee. Among the areas Wilson focussed on was the city’s pedigree — it has hosted the Commonwealth Games, the World University Games and the World Athletics Championships.
He also exaplained that their trip was because they wanted to see how New Delhi organised the event and that they hoped to pick up a few pointers that may have missed their attention. At the end of it, they said, the cultural programme organised between the men’s and women’s meets was a novelty, and they would be trying to ape it at Edmonton.
Soon after they earned the right to host the event last year, they went ahead with the prepration with full support from the central and provincial governments. For the funds, they are working on the ‘variables in kind’ in the absence of sponsors. ‘‘It’s the most important aspect in the absence of sponsors. It’s difficult to attract sponsors towards a half-day event. But VIK takes care of everything,’’ says Wilson.
Who are the people they have involved? People from all walks of life but who have been sportspersons at some point themselves. ‘‘When you have such knowledgeable people around you, things become easier. That’s why we are ready even today to host the event,’’ says the former marathoner.
