The ladies division of the Indian Merchants Chambers is holding its annual exhibition-cum-sale at the Kamalnayan Bajaj Hall at Nariman Point, this Thursday and Friday. Women entrepreneurs from all over the city are being encouraged to display their products. At the exhibition entitled Shiristi 8211; Creation there will be a wide variety of goodies for sale including, oil-free pickles, gift wrapping material made of recycled paper and herbal cosmetics. Opening the exhibition will be Shobha De, who of late has become quite an expert at exhibition openings just last week she was the guest of honour at the Society exhibition in Pune.

Diwali gaga
last Diwali TVS Sa Re Ga Ma brought together great masters from the world of classical music Ustad Bismillah Khan, Smt Girija Devi, Shankar Mahadevan and many others. What8217;s more, all these luminaries performed on the same platform, that too on the ghats of the Ganga.
This time, the popular musical contest goes to Calcutta8217;s Victoria Memorial Hall for yet another special Diwali edition. Apparently, the entire hall was lit up and a special set was erected to hold the 3,000-strong audience. And the theme for this year8217;s three-episode bonanza is folkmusic. So, the Sa Re Ga Ma team got together folk singers from all parts of the country 8212; the Langas and Manganiar8217;s groups from Rajasthan, the Wadali brothers from Punjab, Remo Fernandes from Goa and Runa Laila from Bangladesh.

Kannada culture
The Sadanand Suvarna Cultural Foundation is celebrating a week-long cultural festival titled Karanth Utsav 8217;98 in memory of Late Dr Shivarama Karanth. The festival will be inaugurated by Shri Gururaj Kulkarni, station director, Doordarshan-Mumbai. And Prof H Krishna Bhatt, director of Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Samshodana Kendra which is at Udupi, will be the chief guest.
Eminent Kannada writers will speak about Dr Karanth, and a special video documentary on his life and works will be screened on the occasion. Charles Correa, architect-planner-activist, has won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture-1998, for thesuccessful integration of local art and architectural traditions in the design of the Vidhan Bhavan, Madhya Pradesh. Sitting on top of Arera Hill, overlooking the capital city of Bhopal, the structure is a series of courtyards and pathways that break down the volume into spaces. The use of local red stone, handmade ceramic tiles and painted surfaces, are all a reflection of his long-time well-illustrated concern for human values.
The owners of Cream Centre and New Yorker 8212; the eating spots on Marine Drive 8212; have relaunched America, their fast food joint. Called New York, New York, it is colourfully decorated with Mario Miranda8217;s cartoons and complemented with the latest pop music in the background. This family-run restaurant belongs to Sanjiv Chopra who started New Yorker 17 years ago. In his latest venture along with his partner Tony Batra, the new eatery offers a wide range of food from falafel to pizzas to burgers.
While everything is vegetarian, for the real New Yorkers there is the traditionalAmerican corn-on-the-cob served piping hot with butter. And for children, there is a special kiddies menu that includes bite-sized treats of spaghetti and nachos. They also hire out the restaurant, in the afternoon, for children8217;s birthday parties. And the good news is that the goodies on offer are fairly well-priced with a pasta dish costing Rs 90. And of course, they have a fabulous dessert menu, to simply die for.
