Had Army personnel followed their bosses8217; orders of not wearing their uniforms to railway stations, authorities would have found it easier to counter the suicide attackers who targeted Jammu railway station on Friday last, according to officials who analysed the militants8217; modus operandi.

After extremists began wearing combat fatigues during attacks, Army top brass gave clear-cut instructions to personnel not to visit the railway station in uniform, said sources. Friday8217;s suicide attackers, who were in combat fatigues, passed undetected and gunned down seven people, five of them were Army personnel.

8216;8216;Though I am not authorised to give any such suggestion, I think if there are such instructions from Army authorities and these are followed, it may help in identifying the suspects militants at vital installations like railway station,8217;8217; says D.C. Arya, Post Commander, Railway Protection Force.

Despite a ban, the Army olive green fabric is sold freely in and around Jammu. 8216;8216;This is surprising that despite knowing that the militants have been regularly using the Army combat dress during attacks, why has the Ministry of Defence not taken any action in this regard? If this practice is banned, it will help us identify suspects,8217;8217; says a senior police official.

Army officials here are tight-lipped about the suicide attack. Though they admit that there are instructions for Armymen to refrain from visiting platform in uniform, nobody wants to say anything about initiating action against the violators.

In the last two attacks at Jammu railway station, the militants used Army uniforms to escape security agencies8217; attention.

Even if the militants were caught on CCTV cameras, they would have been mistaken for Army personnel. This issue was also discussed by security officers during the review meeting held a day after the attack.
