CHANDIGARH, JUNE 11: The Government Medical College and Hospital has experimented with a new system of removing all ward boys from the wards. Instead porter8217; system has been started, where ward boys are available on call.

To save on time and manpower, the hospital has experimented with a system where all ward boys, more than 150 in number, sit at one place. To avail their services one requires to call the porter8217;s room and ask for as many ward boys as required.

Earlier, one ward boy used to be on duty in one ward all the time 8211; at the disposal of patients. 8220;This way a lot of time used to be wasted. Also, if the only boy manning a ward used to leave his post and his services were required, it created a lot of hassles for the patients and their relatives, quot; said Dr D. P.Mehta, Medical Superintendent, GMCH-32.

Also since a number of ward boys required to shift patients from one place to another are more than one, the relatives and patients were again put to a lot of inconvenience. With the new system, being practised for the past one month, such a void in one ward could be avoided, said Dr Mehta.
