MUMBAI, April 21: Debutant Namrata Mathur made an upset of sorts beating the experienced Reena Prakash by two frames in a league encounter of the All-India Ladies Snooker tournament at the Bombay Gymkhana today.

Namrata created a flutter by beating Reena, who is ranked amongst the top eight lady snooker players in the country. The board read 45-41, 55-32 in favour of Namrata.

Bangalore’s Judy Walia, seeded second in the tournament, was agin stretches to three sets today. In a repeat of yesterday’s league encounter, Judy lost the first frame 59-57 but rallied to take the next two frames, 58-33 and 59-23. While she was pipped in the first set, she showed her potential in the next two, notching up a fine break of 26 in the decider.

It was a rather mixed day for Maharshtra’s Jagruti Patel today. While she beat Kamala Chandrababu 2-1 in the morning session, she did not have much luck playing against statemate Meenal Bairagi in the evening. Meenal won 71-26, 61-54.

Top-seed and winner at the last Octobers’Ladies Snooker National at Patna, Heena Khandelwal (Mah) had an easier league tie today beating Ritu Shrivatsava 63-43, 73-21.

In a marathon two-and-half-hour affair, Indira Hegde of Karnataka got the better of Sonu Kriplani. After losing the first frame 42-61, Indira managed a remarkable comeback taking both the frames (44-37, 59-24) with comfortable ease.

The Rs 20,000 tournament is the biggest prize money ladies snooker tournament to be played in the country. The 18 participants from across the country have been divided into four groups. The top two from each group after a series of league encounters will qualify for the quarter-finals.

Nobody triumphs

Nobody Sports Club prevailed 2-1 over Central Bank of India in the Bombay Hockey Association-conducted Senior Division League at the Mahindra Stadium, today.

With this win, Nobody steered clear of the relegation zone with seven points. CBI, who also have seven points, avoided relegation.

Sunil D’Sa gave Nobody the lead in the 56th minute, while Wendell Gomes converted a stroke for CBI. Girish Pimple was the other scorer for Nobody.

Bandra Gym A win

Some good lifting by Vijay Chandy and Peter Fernandes, who were well-supported by spikers Brett Cardoz and Arthur Castellino saw hosts Bandra Gymkhana A beat Saints (Juhu) 15-8, 15-8 in the inaugural match of the Bandra GymkhanaOpen Amateur volleyball tournament, last night.

In the other matches, Spotlights A lost 14-16, 14-16 to Jai Taramani Youth Club (Goregaon); Police B beat Bharat Petroleum 15-8, 15-12 and BSES bt Metal Heads (Bandra) 17-15, 15-7.
