He came, he saw, and, pleaded with his audience to come back. But Pourakarmikas municipal workers were determined to teach CM Dharam Singh a lesson for walking in more than an hour-and-a-half late at their function.
Former chief minister S.M. Krishna had failed twice to keep his word on Pourakarmika Day, so this time, the workers assumed Singh wouldn8217;t turn up. The Pourakarmikas waited for the CM at the Town Hall for about 90 minutes. When it was clear he wasn8217;t coming, they trooped out of the venue, shouting slogans against the CM.
Taken aback, Union Minister of State for Surface Transport K.H. Muniyappa, the other guest, sent an SoS to the CM. Singh was at a wedding reception and about to take a bite of the biryani when he got word. He rushed to Town Hall, empty by now.
The Pourakarmikas refused to return to the venue despite several requests from both organisers and the Chief Minister. Singh waited for some time for them to return so that he could inaugurate the function. That, however, did not happen, and he went ahead with the formality with the little crowd that was left.
He followed it up with an apology, rendering a long explanation of the series of engagements he attended. He also said he was aware of the problems of Pourakarmikas as he began his political career in Gulbarga as a corporator. Not that too many of them were listening, though.
