Ashwin Naik man nabbed

A member of the Ashwin Naik gang was arrested in a cordon-and-search operation at Goregoan east this afternoon. Acting on a tip-off, a special squad attached to the Aarey Sub-Division cordoned the area near Modern Bakery at Goregoan. At around 12 pm, gangster Suresh Singh walked into the trap. According to the police, Singh was named in around eight serious offences, including dacoity and murders.

NAB Foundation Day ceremony

The Rustom Merwanji Alpa Ziwalla Memorial Awards Presentation ceremony will be held on January 19 at the National Association for the BlindNAB auditorium at 4.30 pm. The award ceremony is being held on occasion of the 47th foundation day of NAB. Union Urban development Minister Ram Jethmalani will be the chief guest.

Carnatic music competition

The Sriranjani Sangeetha Sabha will conduct its fifth annual Carnatic Music devotional songs competition on January 31 at the Rotary Seva Kendra, Gokhale Compound, Dombivli. National Lions Convention

Over 1,500 Lion members from all over India will meet at the two-day All India Lions Convention in Ahmedabad on January 24-25. The convention will review 10 major projects adopted by Lions Clubs. A Lions Excellence Service Award of Rs one lakh will also be instituted for the first time and will be presented to the most deserving Lion member for outstanding commitment to voluntary community service.

Mando festival held in city

The Dabul Choral8217; group won the first prize at the inaugural Mando Festival held in the city recently at Patkar Auditorium. The festival was organised by GRAF, the Goan Review8217;s cultural review. Juhu Tarachim Mannkam8217; and Cavel Folklore8217; won the second and third prizes.

4 robbers held at Saki Naka

Four armed men were arrested when they stepped into a residential colony to rob at Saki Naka onSaturday.

On a tip-off, members of the Saki Naka police carried out a cordon-and-search operation near Jari Mari and nabbed the four who were moving about suspiciously8217;. Interrogation revealed that they were planning to rob residents of a nearby colony. The police identified the detained as Sheikh Shamshuddin Sheikh 22, Sikandar Abdul Teli 26, Usman Mohammed Umer Sheikh and Pasha Sayyed. A chopper, two knives and a packet of chilly powder were also recovered.

Aga Khan award goes universal

The Aga Khan Award for Architecture AKAA for development projects for poor Muslims, especially in developing countries, would be extended to development projects for the poor in all the six continents. This was announced at a day-long seminar on Saturday. Several developed and developing countries across the world were witnessing the increasing sufferings of the poor, the experts noted adding that the AKAA would grant recognition to any development project which had social and community relevance forthe poor.
