Cops to target lit-up kiosks
Sensing an immediate distraction to motorists, the city traffic police will shortly begin a drive to remove the strings of illuminated advertisements on road dividers. 8220;We will soon issue instructions for the removal of these advertisements,8221; Additional Commissioner traffic said SPS Yadav.
He said the department would be going about the drive to remove distracting hoardings in a phased manner. 8220;We will initially begin with hoardings that are most objectionable.8221; First on the list are the illuminated boxes fixed on electric poles on road dividers. Yadav already told an outdoor advertising agency about his objection to these illuminated boxes and will take a decision after considering their reply.
This will be followed by a ban on hoardings on foot over bridges. The traffic police have already instructed railway authorities to stop further hoardings on FOBs as these are directly in the line of sight of motorists. 8220;Further hoardings on FOBs may not comeup,8221; he said. The traffic police is scrutinising a list of hoardings received from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation last month. 8220;We will take action only after finalising this,8221; Yadav said. He said hoardings along Maharishi Karve Road and at Wilson College junction were of particular concern.

Sorabjee also spoke about the need to value spirituality in development. Development judged purely by material success perpetuates the gap between the haves and have nots. The principle of oneness of humankind should become the guiding strategy for all development, she added.

Govt yet to decide on KG admissions
The Maharashtra government is yet to decide on kindergarten admissions for 1998-99, with the proposed meeting between education ministers, Sudhir Joshi and Anil Deshmukh, failing to take place today.
The ministers, who will meet on Tuesday, will decide whether to promulgate an ordinance amending the Pre-Primary Centres Regulation of Admission Act, 1996, or to hold admissions in abeyance till the amendments are introduced during the Budget Session of the state legislature.
Award named after Pradeep
The Malwa Rang Manch has instituted a Kavi Pradeep Shikhar Sammaan to honour individuals for their outstanding performance in film music. The recipient of theaward will be awarded 51 thousand rupees cash, a certificate of honour, shawl amp; coconut. The award will presented on February 6, the birthday of the late poet, at a programme in Pradeep8217;s hometown Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain.
