FY admission centres
The Mumbai University has set up admission centres for students who were unable to secure admission to the first year degree classes. The centres are: University of Mumbai, Fort campus, (Room 26); Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, B Road, Churchgate; L S Raheja College, Juhu Road, Santacruz (W); Bhausaheb Vartak College, Gorai Road, Borivili (W); Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College, Ghatkopar (W) and B N Bandodkar College of Science, Chendani Bunder Road, Thane.
The admission forms will be issued at the above centres on payment of Rs 10 from June 26 to July 1 between 10 am and 1 pm. The list of selected candidates and allotted colleges will be displayed on the notice boards of the above centres on July 9 evening. Students should approach the principals of the allotted colleges with the original receipt of applications between 10:30 am and 1 pm from July 10-14 for admissions failing which their admission will be treated as cancelled.
Drug peddlerjailed
Additional Sessions Judge K V Chandival today awarded one year rigorous imprisonment to Dastagir Hasan Khan who was found in possession of five grammes of brown sugar. The prosecution case was that Khan was arrested from a hotel at Malad, where he was about to deliver the drug consignment. Khan’s accomplice Hamid Sheikh is absconding.
Smuggling attempt foiled
An ingenious attempt to smuggle out assorted foreign currency to the tune of over Rs 21 lakh was foiled by the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs preventive at Sahar International airport on Tuesday. The two passengers, Abdul Nawab Khan and Abdul Karim Patel, who were departing for Dubai via Pakistan, were intercepted by AIU sleuths on suspicion. examination of their baggage led to the recovery of assorted foreign currency notes which were cleverly concealed in especially created cavities inside the baggage. The passengers have been arrested and further investigation are on.
Blasts accused exemption plea
An accused inthe serial blasts case, Salim Durrani, today filed an application before TADA Judge P D Kodo praying for a permanent exemption from appearing in court in the case.
Durrani, at present on bail, was one of those who had attended the meeting in Dubai, held to plan the serial blasts in the city of March 12, 1993. His advocate Subhash Kanse said Durrani has received death threats and reminded the court that another accused Salim Kurla who had received similar threat had been shot dead in a nursing home at Bandra last month. Durrani has also pleaded that since he is not a Mumbai resident and lives in Tounk, Rajasthan, it was getting difficult for him to find secure accommodation especially with respect to security after the threats.
School gets 100 per cent results
The Gopi Birla Memorial school has once again achieved 100 per cent results in this year’s CBSE exams, held in March. Of the 98 students that appeared, four students got more than 90 per cent, 31 students over 80 per cent, 17 students gotbetween 75 and 79 per cent, 14 between 70 and 74 per cent, 28 between 60 and 69 per cent and the remaining four got second class.
MbPT’s 125th anniversary
The Mumbai Port Trust will celebrate its 125th anniversary on June 26. A postal cover will be released by the department of posts to mark the occasion.
