In its ongoing crackdown against violations of air pollution mitigation guidelines, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Monday issued a stop-work notice to the upcoming Bombay High Court building complex in Bandra East for failing to adhere to the norms.
According to officials, the stop-work notice was issued for violations during the demolition of old government buildings on the site of the new complex where the BMC’s 28 point mitigation guidelines were not adhered to.
The stop work notice came along the heels of the BMC’s ward office on December 20 issuing a show cause notice to the contractor after the inspection squad noted that the mitigation guidelines had not been adhered to.
During its inspection, the civic body noticed that only two of the civic mandated guidelines were adhered to at the construction site which is sprawled over an area of 26.44 acres.
With current heritage premises in South Mumbai’s Fort area proving insufficient in meeting the increasing needs of the HC, the state Public Works Department (PWD) on October 31 issued a tender notice for construction of “New Integrated High Court Complex” in the Bandra Government Colony area.
The notice comes nearly a week after the Bombay High Court on December 24 slammed the BMC for “turning a blind eye” towards
increasing air pollution levels in Mumbai.
