The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday staged a protest at the Ghazipur toll plaza, demanding the closure of toll plazas contributing to rising pollution in the Capital.

AAP’s protest comes against the backdrop of the Supreme Court order on December 17 directing the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to decide within one week on whether the nine toll plazas it runs could be shut temporarily to facilitate smoother traffic flow and reduce vehicular emissions.

In response to the AAP’s protest, Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said that the top court did not issue any direct order to close the toll plazas. “At the same time, the civic body has duly submitted an affidavit before the Supreme Court, providing details of all the steps being taken in this regard,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ankush Narang, Leader of Opposition in MCD said, “On behalf of the AAP, we demand that toll tax plazas be shut down with immediate effect and that such collections be stopped. Today, Delhi has a so-called ‘four-engine’ BJP government, so there is no shortage of funds for them. This revenue can be taken from the Delhi government or even the Central government, but the lives of the people are far more important.”
