
Anti-pollution call
The new Sheriff of Mumbai, Kulwant Singh Kohli, has urged the BMC, vice-chancellors of Mumbai and SNDT universities, and director of higher education and school levles to free Mumbai of pollution. Kohli stated in a release that educationists can improve city conditions by involving students from NSS and NCC.
Course
The Trailblazers in collaboration with the Forest Department will organise a one-day certificate course in Adventure and Nature. The course will be held at Borivli National Park on every Sunday beginning January 11, 1998. Special all female batches are slated for January 25 and February 15. Media kits
On January 5, the Xavier Institute of Communications XIC has organised a function to release two media kits in Marathi produced for the training of rural non-formal educators. Each kit comprises a trainers8217; manual and a video casette and explores key issues like education, curriculum development and teaching methodology. Entitled Empowering the Teacher, Empowering the Community8217;, the kits have been jointly produced by ASTHA, the community outreach department and AXIS, the film amp; video production department of XIC. A free medical camp is being organised by Shri Thakur Maharaj, Om Datta Trust8217; at Uran Nagar Palika Primary school number 1, Uran, Raigad district, on January 4 between 10 am and 4 pm.
New scheme
The Western Railway has introduced the TATKAL scheme which will benefit last minute passengers. On an experimental basis, the scheme will be only for the 2953/4 August Kranti Rajdhani Express from Mumbai Central to Hazrat Nizamuddin only.
A press note said one AC 3 tier coach will be earmarked for reservation, booking for which will be opened one day in advance on a first come first served basis. While no waiting list will be maintained for this scheme, the WR will charge an additional Rs 150 for a reservation. If a passenger wishes to cancel his ticket bought under this scheme, the additional charge would not be refunded. Those passengers who have their reservations done by the usual system can also avail of this facility by paying the additional charge and proper identification. A special counter has been opened at Mumbai Central from January 1, 1998 and the scheme will be extended to other trains later.
BEST measures
The BEST has taken the following steps to help women passengers. On 16 routes, 42 trips of buses have been earmarked exclusively for women during peak hours. On 20 routes at 34 points, women may enter from the front door of the buses. Special inspectors will be posted to help formation of systematic queues and to help women board the bus at bus stops.
