First hybrid bypass surgery

For the first time in the country, a 70-year-old patient suffering from critical coronary artery disease and lung complications was successfully operated with a “hybrid approach” involving minimal invasive direct coronary artery bypass combined with baloon angioplasty.

The patient was operated by the Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences here by a team of doctors led by Dr B K Goyal and Dr S S Bhattacharya. Dr Goyal, who is also the dean of the hospital, said the coronary angiography carried out showed a 100 per cent blockage of left anterior dissending artery (LAD) and 90 per cent blockage of circumflex artery, with the atheromatous plaque extending in the left main artery.

After review and discussion of his angio, it was decided that the patient was not suitable for baloon angioplasty and high risk for bypass because of the patient’s severe restrictive lung disease. Then the doctors decided to perform the surgery by hybrid approach and the procedureprovided total coronary revascularisation to the high-risk patient.
