Man, two wives die in blaze

A 50-year-old man and his two wives died after one of the wives set herself on fire at Surya Nagar, Vikhroli (W) on Tuesday evening.

Satyanarayan Singh Thakur (50) had married Usha (25) recently. This was his second marriage since his first wife Kasturi (35) could only give birth to a daughter. However, the second marriage led to frequent quarrels between the two wives. After one such quarrel late on Tuesday, Usha set herself on fire at their Chhatrapati chawl residence. When Satyanarayan and Kasturi rushed in to help, they too were engulfed in the blaze.

Navi Mumbai went without newspapers for a second day today after newspaper vendors went on strike since Tuesday morning, stopping delivery of all newspapers in the locality.

The vendors were protesting against the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) drive which demolished several newspaper vendor stalls. The strike is slated to continue on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the vendors under the aegis of the Navi Mumbai Vritta Patra Sangh stalled delivery of newspapers, demanding that the NMMC legalise all the70 newspaper stalls in Navi Mumbai as they could not be put in the category of other hawkers. They also said that the vendors be allowed to keep their stalls open between 6 am and 10 pm.

However, the NMMC has said the vendors would be given a licence to keep their stalls only between 6 am and 12 noon and again between 3 and 5 pm. The hawkers have turned this down saying that this would adversely affect the distribution of eveningers in Navi Mumbai.
