NEW DELHI, DEC 1: The isolated salvo fired by Mulayam Singh Yadav in far-away Purnea in Bihar, reverberated in Andhra Pradesh Bhavan here, rattling the United Front constituents which met today and tried to decode the SP leader8217;s call for the formation of a new Front to fight secular forces.

Though SP general secretary Amar Singh issued a retraction, Mulayam8217;s diatribe against the UF appears to be the first step towards distancing himself from the Front. He is preparing the ground for a poll alliance with the Congress in Uttar Pradesh. Mulayam called for elections to break the present impasse. Significantly Mulayam attended the United Front8217;s meeting two days ago nor went to meet the President himself today. He was represented on both occasions by Amar Singh.

Mulayam vent his spleen against all those UF leaders Gujral and Gupta, who claimed to be secular but opposed the imposition of President8217;s Rule in UP. Gupta and Mulayam had exchanged sharp words at a Cabinet meeting after Kalyan Singh had swung a majority in the UP Assembly.

Mulayam may feel that had the Government insisted on President8217;s Rule despite the President8217;s objections, he may not have been in the tight corner that he finds himself in today. After all, a government in hand makes all the difference in an election and the rule of Governor Romesh Bhandari would have meant proxy rule by Mulayam.

SP sources say that Mulayam has decided to align with the Congress in UP. The Congress may not have much of a base left in the State but even its 3-4 per cent upper caste vote bank could make all the difference to him. As it is Mulayam Singh has been wooing the upper castes in recent months.
