
ELISTA, Oct 8: Indian Men scored a 2.5-1.5 victory over Iran in the ninth round of the Chess Olympiad here today. GM aspirant Krishnan Sasikiran was successful for India on the fourth board while GMs Dibyendu Barua and Pravin Thipsay and Abhijit Kunte conceded draws.
The Indian women continued their slide losing 1-2 to lowly rated Austria in the ninth round. While Bhagyashree Thipsay and Pallavi Shah drew their encounters on the first and second boards, Swati Ghate lost to S Sommer.
Indian men have 19 points after their ninth round victory while the women have so far logged 13.5 points.
In the men8217;s section, young Sasikiran was in good form against H Abbasifar in the French defence winning in after the 40th move.
Kunte, playing white, chose his favourite Alapin variation of Sicilian defence but had to agree to a draw after 80 moves aginst Amir Mallahi. Barua came out of the Caro-Kann defence with a disadvantage against Amir Bagheri, who could not convert his gains for a draw. Thipsay too drew hisgame with A Khakpoor.
