NEW DELHI, AUG 28: Minimum wages for labour engaged in organised and unorganised sectors have been raised from Rs 35 to Rs 40 per day, official sources have said.

In letters to state chief ministers, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said the upward revision was essential in view of the rise in consumer price index over the last two years, as this indicated a rise in the cost of living, an official release here said.

Vajpayee has asked them to take necessary steps for upward revision of the minimum wages and ensure its implementation by conducting periodic inspections 8220;as it is essential to achieve the objective of the Minimum Wages Act8221;.

Vajpayee pointed out to the chief ministers that the national agenda for governance sought to make labour, in both organised and unorganised sectors, equal and proud partners in national production and progress.

The prime minister said the timely payment of wages to workers and payment of minimum wages to all workers engaged in scheduled employment were the key factors in boosting workers8217; morale and productivity.

He also asked them to ensure its implementation through periodic inspections.

Vajpayee said the national agenda of his government sought to make labour in both the organised and unorganised sectors an equal and proud partner in production and progress.

It also envisages that laws relating to equal pay for equal work, both for men and women, are strictly implemented.
