VADODARA, Sept 30: Adopting a Gandhian attitude, a few milk mandalis of the district have threatened to launch a non-violent agitation if the Baroda Dairy did not withdraw the hike on the charges of cattle-feed within 10 days.

At a meeting held at the Kamubala Hall, on Wednesday, the members resolved to stage a protest in front of the Dairy gate if their demand was not accepted.

Earlier, the Dairy hiked the price of cattle-feed from Rs 3,800 per tonne to around Rs 4,300. While the hike was imperative due to the poor monsoon, according to sources, the Dairy continued to give a return of Rs 180 per kilogram fat to the producers, a top official claimed.

Though while accepting the Rs 180/kg figure, the Board of Directors had decided to reduce the prices after August end, the existing rate still continued, irking the milk mandalis.

In a letter to Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel, representatives of 14 milk mandalis demanded that they be given cattle-feed at a cheaper rate as all the mandalis were together supplying two lakh litres of milk and the Dairy had raised the prices of various products.

The Dairy should also put forward the financial data about cattle-feed and other produces, they further demanded, adding that irregularities could be detected if the accounts of the Dairy were properly checked by some State Government officer.
