Anti-encroachment drive enters third day in Mohali’s Phase 3B2

Residents protest action, allege double standards; ward councillor not spared

mohaliThe district administration launched this eviction operation to remove the illegal encroachment following a directive from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The Mohali Municipal Corporation Wednesday carried out its anti-encroachment drive for the third consecutive day in Phase 3B2, resuming action from the same location where two house owners had earlier been given time to remove illegal structures.

While one homeowner removed the encroachment on his own, the Municipal Corporation team demolished the structure at the second house. Thereafter, a joint team of the Municipal Corporation, GMADA and the police removed several encroachments one after another. During the drive, encroachments linked to the residence of ward councillor Jaspreet Singh Gill were also removed.

A large number of residents staged protests during the operation, stating that they fully respect the orders of the High Court, but alleged that no clear or uniform policy regarding the anti-encroachment action had been presented by GMADA or the Municipal Corporation.

Councillor alleges bias

Councillor Jaspreet Singh Gill alleged that with municipal elections approaching, strict action is being selectively carried out in wards represented by Congress councillors. “People are ready to remove encroachments themselves, but time is being granted selectively, which reflects discrimination,” he alleged.

GMADA explains policy

Former Deputy Mayor Manjit Singh Sethi, who was present at the site, clarified GMADA’s policy, stating that landscaping is permitted up to five feet from boundary walls and up to 7.5 feet for corner houses. “Any permanent structure beyond this limit is considered an illegal encroachment,” he said.

Tension during removal from government park

Tension escalated when iron grills were removed from a government park. The situation turned volatile after a resident sat in front of a JCB machine in protest, forcing the authorities to halt the drive for nearly two hours.
