The incident led to severe traffic disruption on the flyover, with long queues reported on the Chandigarh–Dera Bassi road.
A moving truck was gutted after it caught fire on the Chandigarh–Ambala flyover near Zirakpur on Wednesday, triggering panic among commuters and causing a major traffic jam in the area.
According to Zirakpur traffic in-charge Manphool Singh, the truck was travelling from Chandigarh towards Dera Bassi when it suddenly caught fire while on the flyover. Thick plumes of smoke and flames were visible from a distance, alarming motorists and pedestrians.
The truck driver acted promptly by pulling the vehicle to the side of the road and jumping out in time, thereby escaping unhurt.
On receiving information, two fire tenders rushed to the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control after considerable effort. However, the truck was completely reduced to ashes.
The incident led to severe traffic disruption on the flyover, with long queues reported on the Chandigarh–Dera Bassi road. Traffic police personnel reached the spot and diverted vehicles through alternate routes to ease congestion.
Providing details, Manphool Singh said, “Due to the fire incident, traffic movement on the flyover was affected for some time. Vehicles were diverted promptly to ensure smooth flow and prevent further inconvenience to commuters.”
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, though a short circuit is suspected. Police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
No casualties were reported in the incident, officials said, though the truck suffered heavy damage.
