
PUNE, May 7: A fight between two women inmates of the Yerwada mental hospital ended in the death of one of them, Indira Narayan Memaniwar 24, who succumbed to her injuries this afternoon.
The shocking incident which has exposed grave chinks in the security arrangements at the hospital took place on April 26. However, it came to light only today when the hospital authorities lodged a complaint with the police charging Bharti Shankar Ghadge 27, another inmate of the hospital, with the murder of Indira.
According to police sources, Bharti suffered from schizophrenia. She was admitted to the hospital three years ago and was undergoing treatment at the women8217;s ward Ward No II. The deceased, who was also suffering from schizophrenia was admitted in the same ward since the last two years.
On April 26, Bharti, in a schizophrenic fit, attacked Indira who was asleep on an adjacent bed. Yanked off her bed, Indira sustained serious head injuries when it banged against the titled floor. The other inmates in the ward raised the alarm. However, by the time the security men arrived Indira had been badly battered. She was rushed to the Sassoon hospital where she had undergone treatment for the last ten days.
Since the incident, Bharti had been kept in isolation. The hospital has 2,540 patients housed in 80 wards.
