Maya146;s Ambedkar drive

While the demolition of a sports complex in Lucknow to amalgamate it with the adjacent Ambedkar Park may have been stayed by the High Court, the Mayawati regime has opened its purse-strings for other new, old or planned Ambedkar projects

AMBEDKAR SMARAK

The Smarak that has already been granted several crores of rupees would again receive a development grant of over Rs 300 crore. Over100 railings of the Smarak have been dismantled, while the pink flooring near the Buddha statue will reportedly be replaced with designer tiles and stones.

PARIVARTAN CHOWK

Built by Mayawati in 1995 as a tribute to Dalit leader Periyar, the Parivartan Chowk has received over Rs 30 lakh in the name of development since the new Government assumed power. The crossing is expected to get another Rs 10 lakh as the statues of other Dalit icons are to be installed

MALL AVENUE

The Cane Commissioner8217;s multi-storey office in Mall Avenue was demolished last month 8212; incidentally on a Sunday, when a court stay couldn8217;t have been obtained 8212; and there are reports that another Ambedkar memorial is coming up at the place. But no one really knows for sure, as the entire construction is happening behind tin sheets

NEAR AMBEDKAR CHOWK

As part of Mayawati8217;s Ambedkar Smarak plan, the nearby Ambedkar Chowk is witnessing a revamp. A major portion of the pavement has been dug up as a Rs 10-crore sanitation project has been taken up at the site
