LONDON, DECEMBER 19: Manchester United completed a difficult week for West Ham with a 4-2 win at Upton Park to go top of the English Premiership for at least 24 hours. Leeds could return to the summit after their Sunday game against Chelsea.

West Ham had learned their place in the semi-finals of the League Cup was in jeopardy after it was revealed they had fielded an ineligible player in their penalty shoot-out win over Aston Villa. Manny Omoyimi was only on the field for seven minutes but had already played in this season’s competition for Gillingham. West Ham were 3-0 behind inside 21 minutes after goals from Dwight Yorke and Ryan Giggs (two). West Ham fought back with Paolo Di Canio scoring twice. But after the Italian had missed a chance of a hat-trick, Yorke scored again for United.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists Nigerian striker Kanu will stay at Highbury after his side’s 1-1 draw at Highbury with Wimbledon. Next month Kanu is on African Nations Cup duty and there has been speculation abouthis future in the English press. Wenger said: “His future is here I am convinced of that. He has accepted he will be in our pay structure and there is no argument over finance.” (AFP)

Bari unleash teen power

ROME: Inter Milan lost 2-1 at Bari after being outclassed by a pair of teenage strikers with almost no Serie A experience.

With South African forward Phil Masinga and Sweden’s Ykselos Manovski injured, Bari gambled on 18-year-old Nigerian striker Michael Enyinnaya and 17-year-old Antonio Cassano.

Enyinnaya scored Bari’s opener after seven minutes with a shot from 35 metres. Christian Vieri pulled Inter level five minutes later but Cassano scored the winner two minutes from the final whistle.

Enyinnaya, making his Serie A debut, and Cassano, who made his first appearance for the club last weekend, did a lap of honour after their remarkable performances.

Cassano’s joy was particularly felt. Born on July 12, 1982 — the day Italy won the World Cup in Madrid — he is an Intersupporter and had said before the match he was dreaming of scoring against Marcello Lippi’s side.
