The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police has arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with three robberies reported from the Capital in the recent past; including an armed robbery of the cash van of two major banks.

Police sources said one more suspect has been detained.

The police said Murtaza Ali Khan, a resident of Bareilly, was picked up outside Lions Hospital in New Friends Colony on November 28. According to his sister, Khan had come to visit her on November 27 in Zakir Nagar and she had sent him to the hospital to pick up medicines for her.

When he didn’t return — and for over five days — she put in a writ petition in court asking the Crime Branch to furnish information on him.

On Thursday, the Crime Branch told the High Court that he was arrested for a few robberies in the city. Police sources said Khan is a member of a gang, and that the police are hunting for the other members and have detained at least one more suspect.

Confirming that Khan “has been arrested in robbery cases”, DCP (Crime) Neeraj Thakur refused to give out any more information.

Khan is suspected to be involved in a robbery on November 18, wherein armed assailants robbed two guards taking about Rs 16 lakh to a security van near Satya Niketan.

On October 15, a businessman and his two sons were shot at in the Anand Vihar area of East Delhi. More than Rs 5 lakh was reportedly robbed in this case.
