The Bharuch rural police on Tuesday arrested 20-year-old Suresh Rawal in connection with the rape of an eight-month-old infant in Dankaria village on October 12. While the infant underwent a surgery at a local civil hospital, the police on Tuesday denied reports that Rawal was mentally unstable.

8220;Rawal, a resident of Mehsana, had been given shelter by the infant8217;s parents at their house in Dankaria after he fled from his home. Investigations have revealed that Rawal was upset, but not mentally unstable,8221; said Bharuch DySP and investigating officer B S Ninama. He also added that the victim8217;s family had promised a job to Rawal.

Tara Vasava, the mother of the infant had registered a complaint against Rawal after he went missing immediately after the incident.

The police said that since there appeared to be nothing wrong with Rawal, he would be subjected to regular legal procedures including being sent to judicial custody. He has been booked on charges of raping a minor.

Ninama also said that though the infant8217;s condition was stable she would be kept in hospital for another week.
