NEW DELHI, APRIL 18: The Centre has directed the Cricket Board to make public the Chandrachud committee report on betting and match-fixing submitted about three years ago.

Sports Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa said on Tuesday he has asked the board officials to bring out the report, and in case his direction was not complied with, he himself would do it.

The board’s report on Indian cricket team’s recent performances and the current match-fixing allegations was expected to be subitted to him "a day or two", the Minister said.

In an informal chat with reporters after a function in honour of the Indian hockey team, Dhindsa said he went through the report and did not find "anything special" and did not see why it should not be made public.

Asked whether the Government planned to institute a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into betting and match-fixing allegations in Indian cricket, Dhindsa said: "We are open to everything."

A final decision in this regard would be taken on the basis of discussions in Parliament and outcome of the April 27 meeting between him and the BCCI officials here.

The one-man Chandrachud panel, set up in the wake of match-fixing allegations by former all-rounder Manoj Prabhakar, absolved players of any wrongdoing in the report submitted to the board in 1997.

A copy of the report was submitted to the Government but not made public despite demands from various quarters. Home Minister L K Advani also recently favoured making it public.

Former Indian cricket captain Bishan Singh Bedi said the scandal had led to severe loss of face for the game and quipped: "Now people have more faith in hockey than cricket", while applauding the hockey team for winning the four-nation tournament in Perth two days ago.
