A sessions Court on Friday granted anticipatory bail to Madhur Bhandarkar—the director accused of raping model-turned-actress Preeti Jain.

For the fourth consecutive day, the courtroom was crammed with people as the drama unfolded. As the director’s lawyers Shrikant Shivde and Girish Kulkarni sat with eyes glued to the judge, Jain waited in silence.

Judge Vachha declared simply that an anticipatory bail of Rs 20,000 was granted with two sureties of the same amount. Bhandarkar has been asked to present himself at the police station concerned when required and cannot leave the city limits until investigations are on. ‘‘I am happy with the decision. I have gone through such an ordeal but my wife, my family and friends stood by me like rocks,’’ said Bhandarkar. The director said he will go back to work but will continue to cooperate with police. ‘‘I’m back to Page 3… from page one,’’ he laughed.

Jain, meanwhile, was a picture of calm. ‘‘Not at all,’’ she exclaimed when asked if she was discouraged by the court order. ‘‘He is still a criminal and rapist out on bail. I am sure he will be behind bars soon.’’ In a statement she distributed to the media after the order, she claimed she never filed a complaint against music director Suhel Khan. But Jain added she had full faith in the judiciary and Mumbai police. ‘‘They need some time to put all the evidence together,’’ she explained. ‘‘If they could nail big names like Bharat Shah and R.S. Sharma, they can definitely get Bhandarkar.’’
