VADODARA, July 26 Some 160 of those affected by an ammonia gas leak that followed an accident on National Highway no 8 near Chhani were compensated after 14 years at the 1,684th Lok Adalat held in the city on Saturday.

While today’s Lok Adalat focused on motor accident victims, the next, to be held on August 2, will take up cases related to the Oriental Insurance Company.

Describing the accident whose victims were compensated today, R D Desai, manager of the New India Insurance Company, said two tankers carrying ammonia gas collided near Chhani in August, 1984, leading to the death of one person and injuries to 160. A total of Rs 6.23 lakhs was paid over to them today.

In another settlement, he said, Thakorebhai Macchi, an autorickshaw driver who has been in coma for the past two years following an accident, had been awarded Rs 4 lakhs. Saturday’s Lok Adalat settled 222 motor accident cases, involving Rs 97 lakhs, according to a Press release. A total of 283 cases had been placed before the court; 241 parties had been present.

Inaugurating the Lok Adalat, district judge Dinesh Buch said this was the cheapest and the fastest way of redressing motor accident claims.

Three judges attended the Lok Adalat, including D G Shah; the counselors included Ruma Diwanji, Ramila Solanki, D O Parikh, Bhupendra Parikh, Kanubhai Patel, Nilesh Parikh and J B Bhatt.

The adalat was jointly organised by the District Legal Service Cell and the Vadodara Junior Chambers.
