Dido; Crescendo Music

Dido Armstrong has outdone herself with her second album Life For Rent. The Londoner sings your song many times over. Whether it’s about a lover’s indifference in Do You Have A Little Time or leaving a lover in See You When You’re 40 or holding onto love in Don’t Leave Home, you’re singing with her.

No frilly flamboyance or angst-ridden riddles for this delicious-voiced singer—just simple lyrics that leave you sated in a beautiful aftermath. While the first single White Flag is the song of a devoted lover, Stoned is an unrequited lover’s trip, who unlike the bleeding-heart variety decides he is ‘bored of hanging out in your cold’. The title track talks about the singer’s free spirit that’s reflected in the words Cos nothing I have is truly mine. Co-written by sister Rollo, the track’s definitely one of the highlights.

Then she caresses you in Who Makes You Feel, which gained its hip-hop vibe from studio assistant P*nut who worked with Dido during the making of her debut No Angel. ‘‘Wow! Unbelievable! I want to write lyrics to this right away’’ was how Dido reacted to the track.

Another track with completely honest lyrics that sweep you away is Do You Have A Little Time—keys that take you onto another plane—this one’s an upper.

In Dido’s own words, From behind these walls I hear your song/oh sweet words/the music that you play lights up my world. For a blast of sunshine pick up Life For Rent.
