• Pulling out of the peace process with Pakistan after the terror attack would be an irresponsible knee-jerk reaction (‘Don’t blame Pakistan, look within’, July 23). The peace process has made remarkable process in the last three years. It has borne fruit because of tremendous investment by ordinary people, artists, media, politicians and the governments. It should now be taken to its logical conclusion. The reason why the process has become weak and terror attacks have increased is because Musharraf’s position has become weak. He has stopped acting like a statesman and has taken recourse in familiar tactics. This doesn’t mean that we start hoping for his position to strengthen but rather the process to acquire a momentum of its own so that it can continue with the next leader. Pakistan deserves a democracy and that is also good for India.

• Although there is no doubt that Pakistan is squarely responsible for the brutal acts of Islamic jihadis on Indian soil, the ground reality is that Pakistan can never do that without active support from within India. The main strength of Pakistani-sponsered Islamic jihadis lies in the policy of appeasement of Muslims practised by selfish pseudo-secularist politicians, cutting across party lines.

• Hats off to Mumbaikars who neither panicked nor indulged in any disruptive activities after the bomb blasts. Instead, there were people helping each other on streets. This clearly proved that the terrorists’ plan to incite communal riots failed completely. But how long will the Mumbaikars keep quiet? The resilience of Mumbaikars seems to have made the Indian Government lethargic and relaxed. All we get to hear is sympathy and condolences for the victims and platitudes of tackling terrorism aggressively.

• It is surprising that Sudheendra Kulkarni should advocate against hot pursuit of terrorists (‘Follow Israel’s example? No!’, July 16). Didn’t the words ‘hot pursuit’ originate during L K Advani’s tenure? However, I do agree with all else that he mentions in his article. Instead of hot pursuit, I feel it is time to consider cutting off all ties with our hostile neighbours.
