After blowing away a score of chances to settle down in the Test team, Darren Lehmann finally managed to resist the surge of youth last year. Since scoring his maiden century against West Indies in 2003, he seems to have matured enough as a Test player.
At 34, Lehmann knows time is running out for him. ‘‘Opportunities did come across me in the past. I might not have utilised them in the proper way. However the vice-captaincy surprised me a bit.’’
A question about the Aussie strategy against Indian batsmen prompted a wide grin and this reply from Lehmann: ‘‘Wait and see. We don’t want to give too much away. ’’
Then came his master stroke. A stern reminder of the fact that when the last time both the sides met at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the visitors were the run-away winners. Lehmann scored a fifty in that victory. That might not rest well with the Indian team.
