BANGALORE, MARCH 20: Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna on Monday turned down in the Assembly a forceful demand for a CBI probe into the recent killing of Congress MLA Vasanth Asnotikar, saying the state Corps of Detectives COD was on the verge of completing the probe.

Winding up a discussion on the gunning down of Asnotikar at Karwar by unidentified gunmen, Krishna said according to him and the Government8217;s perception, CBI probe was not quot;appropriatequot; and stressed the COD should be given a quot;fair chancequot;.

quot;If we go on handing over everything to CBI, why do we need the state police department?quot; Krishna said, as BJP members staged a dharna protesting rejection of their demands for a CBI probe and for making public the report of Jagannath Shetty Commission on Bhatkal riots a few years ago.

BJP members led by Opposition leader Jagadish Shettar insisted on CBI enquiry, asserting that the case had inter-state ramifications and the central agency could bring out the truth. Krishna said the COD had specific information about the culprits and pleaded with BJP members to quot;have faith in our own police and give a chance to COD to proceed further without any hitchquot;.

The probe, he said, had reached the quot;final stagequot; but added that no time frame could be fixed for its completion. The state police were pursuing the case with quot;focussed and single minded attentionquot;, he said, and declared that the culprits would be brought to justice.

Earlier, Opposition BJP, JD U and JD S sought to move an adjournment motion on the issue but Speaker M V Venkatappa declined consent to it but permitted a debate.
