Kharar, January 15: The Department of Telecommunications have commissioned a new 4,000-line E-10B RLU electronic telephone exchange at Kharar and the telephone numbers previously working on level 55 and 56 have been converted to 45 and 46.

Disclosing this here today, a spokesman of the department said that the last four digits of the telephone numbers will remain the same and the subscribers will, however, have to register their dynamic NSD/ISD code afresh immediately after the changeover.

He further stated that the prefixes for making phone calls to S.A.S. Nagar, Chandigarh and Panchkula from Kharar and vice-versa have also been changed. Previously, the local subscribers had to dial 88242; before the telephone numbers for getting connected to any of these three places and vice-versa.

While the new code for S.A.S. Nagar and Chandigarh is 911, the local subscribers will have to use the STD code of 0172 for Panchkula. Following the commissioning of the electronic exchange, 2,579 additional telephone connections will be shortly released. At present there are 1,421 subscriptions.

Meanwhile, over one thousand telephone numbers in different parts of the township are lying out of order for the past one week due to some technical fault in the local telephone exchange.

Erratic power supply

The residents of Kharar and its surrounding villages have been hit hard due to the erratic power supply here for the past about two weeks.Undeclared power cuts, frequent power failure, voltage fluctuation have become a routine affair here. The drinking water supply gets affected due to the power failure causing great hardship to the residents.The residents have asked higher officials of the Punjab State Electricity Board to immediately improve the power supply system in the area.

In order to thank the voters and express their gratitude towards them, the newly elected municipal councillors of the township have started a door-to-door campaign in their respective constituency. Public meetings are being organised in various parts of the township in which local issues like cleanliness, street lights, water supply and sewerage systems are being raised by the residents.
