MUMBAI, JUNE 4: The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Transport committee chairman Deepak Thakur today said the Election Commission had okayed the process of staff recruitment for the city bus service. “If all goes well we should have the buses plying by the end of August,” Thakur said.
But residents are not so sure, as several such promises have been made earlier. One year ago, it had been announced that the bus service would start from May 1, 1997. The then KDMT chairman Madhukar Hardas later announced the service would start on August 15.
On October 28, 1997, it was again declard that the buses would ply from December 31. But even after 25 new buses were brought to Kalyan on January 6 this year, there were no signs of staff recruitment, depots and construction of bus stops. The buses were parked in the KDMC premises.
A plot near Ganesh Ghat off Waldhuni river earmarked for the depot was hurriedly developed and the buses sent there later, where they remained since last five months. A depot worker, requesting anonymity, said: “The paint and parts of the bus are getting worn out.” They feared the monsoon would cause further damage, though Hardas said the bus parts had been “specially treated to prevent corrosion due to climatic conditions.”
