PATIALA, July 19: Punjab Finance Minister Kanwaljit Singh has warned industrial units to immediately install pollution control devices and affluent treatment plants or face action.
Speaking at a function organised by the Dera Bassi Rotary Club and municipal council at Dera Bassi today, Kanwaljit Singh said that the Punjab government had planned a tree plantation drive in vacant government land along canals and around government buildings to help save the environment. He said increase in the volume of vehicular traffic was causing several diseases including eye ailments, allergies and lung diseases.
The Minister said that a special campaign to create awareness among the masses about environment preservation would be launched in the schools, village panchayats and municipal councils int he state. Many social and voluntary organisations would be associated with the campaign, Singh said.
Kanwaljit Singh announced two new schemes for cleanliness of villages. patialasaid that the waste water in villages would now be collected at one place outside the village and it would be processed for irrigation purposes. A matching grant scheme was also being introduced in the villages, under which any village panchayat would be entitled to a matching grant for any proposal for execution of a project for cleanliness of the village.
The Minister announced that all the primary school buildings would be renovated and those in need of furniture would get it on priority. He called upon village panchayats to draw up their priority of plans to be executed so that developmental works could be taken up in a phased manner.
In an important decision, the Minister announced waiving off of the restrictions imposed by the Punjab Urban Development Authority (puda) on new land registration deeds in the Dera Bassi Municipal Council limits and said new registries would be allowed from Tuesday onwards.
