
CALCUTTA, December 13: Vijay Kannan of India won the boys singles ITF title defeating Hong Tai Kim of South Korea 6-3 6-3 in the finals of the championship at Dakshin Kalikata Sansad Court here today.
Serving with accuracy and displaying fine ground strokes, Kannan, the Loyala College Student from Chennai, started on a whirl-wing fashion and raced to a 5-1 lead in no time in the first set as the match began, breaking Hong8217;s service twice in the process.
Stung by the early reverse, Hong tried to put up some fight and managed to reduce the gap as he broke Kannan8217;s service in the seventh game. But the Korean who was committing too many negative points failed to make further break through and lost the set at 3-6.
Inspired after winning the first set, Kannan started promisingly in the second set and broke Hong8217;s service in the very first game. After both players retained their services till the eight game, Kannan again produced some fine cross court returns to break Hong8217;s service again in the ninth game to win the first ITF Junior singles title of his career.
The girls singles final between Korean An-Na Lee and Uzma Khan of India, which was expected to be a well contested one, turned out to be an one sided affair for the Korean challenger.
With good service and fine double handed returns lee never allowed Uzma, the junior national champion from Hyderabad, to settle down at all. In spite of winning the first set easily, An-Na Lee never loosened her grip and started the second set with all seriousness and broke the very first service to force a 2-0 lead. The seventh game saw Lee breaking Uzma8217;s service again to take a 5-2 lead and then retaining her own to win the double crown in this meet.
