
A computer engineer thrashed a traffic police constable on duty at the Vetal Baba chowk on Senapati Bapat Road on Thursday morning.
However, this time constable, Amol Sadashiv Sarde, also hit back with his baton 8212; specially provided by the traffic control branch in the wake of rising number of attacks on traffic police.
The police have arrested the engineer identified as Manas Raju Nalukishor Kher 27, following a complaint filed by Sarde with the Chatuhshrungi police station.
According to the police, Sarde is a new recruit. He was deployed at the Vetal Baba chowk as a part of the special drive against traffic violations. Kher was coming on a motorcycle on the same route.
As the signal turned red, Kher stopped at the chowk, but violated traffic rule by stopping his bike over the zebra crossing. Sarde asked Kher for his driving licence. When Kher failed to produce his license, Sarde asked him to pay fine. At this, Kher started arguing and beating Sarde.
Deputy Commissioner Traffic Manoj Patil said that Sarde hit back as he did not have an option. 8220;I personally visited the crime scene. The engineer is at fault. He has been arrested for causing disturbance in government work and manhandling a policeman on duty,8221; Patil said.
Joint Commissioner of Police Rajendra Sonawane said, 8220;it is unfortunate that Kher, an employee with a prominent corporate company in Pune, broke the law. He was beating a police constable on the road and none of the citizens there stepped forward in support of the police.
Action against 17,000 offenders in 3 days
The traffic control branch of police conducted a major drive between October 14 and 16 and collected a fine of Rs 19.5 lakh from 17,000 offenders for violating various traffic norms. Traffic police teams were deployed at 25 spots across the city. DCP Manoj Patil said that traffic police personnel worked hard and managed to file so many cases without affecting their bandobast duties and routine work.
