Infiltration along Indo-Bangla border halved: BSF

The Border Security Force said infiltration along the Indo-Bangladesh border had come down by 50 per cent.

The Border Security Force on Tuesday said infiltration along the Indo-Bangladesh border had come down by 50 per cent this year, compared to the corresponding period last year.

“The gauge (for infiltration) we have is the number of arrests made. If we compare the figures, it has come down by half this year,” BSF Director General A K Mitra told reporters here.

Mitra said there is some degree of infiltration and cattle smuggling along the border, but there is nothing out of the ordinary.

“It will not be right to say that there is nothing going on. And if we think it will come down to zero, personally, I am not confident if that is right.” The fencing along the border was almost 60 per cent complete. However, there were 265 patches in it, he said.

Asked if militants were using the Bangladesh and Nepal routes to sneak into the country, Mitra said, “There is no concrete evidence to prove it.” The Nepal border is porous like the Bangladesh border. So it (infiltration) cannot be ruled out, Mitra, who was here for the passing out ceremony of 282 BSF recruits, said.

On the infiltration into Jammu and Kashmir from across the Line of Control, he said the passes were still snow-bound.
