
New Delhi, May 7: Indian boys defeated New Zealand 3-0 on their way to the knock-out quarter-final stage at the NTT under-14 World Junior tennis championship in Jakarta on the third day.
After a good opening day, the girls faced reverses when Australia rallied from a match down to defeat India 2-1, making the task of reaching the knock-out stage a difficult one for the Indian girls, according to information received from team coach Mayur Vasant.
India trounced Malaysia 3-0 in the girls competition on the second day while boys had lost 1-2 to Hong Kong.
Chatwinder Singh put India ahead with a 6-4, 6-4 win over T Kiril of New Zealand and then under-14 number one Vikrant Sane beat GD Jones 6-4, 7-5.
Sane was down 1-4 in the first set before he got his timings and reeled off five straight games to win the set.
In the doubles, Sane/Chatwinder beat the Kiwi pair of Kiril/Jones 6-2, 6-2 for a 3-0 clean sweep.
Indian boys now face top seed Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals. Winner in the round of eight will qualify for the World Group.
The girls also started well against Australia. Sasha Abraham defeated Adriana Szili 6-4, 6-4. Isha Lakhani then lost to Darya Ivanov 6-3, 6-1.
Isha8217;s poor form continued in the doubles as she and Sania Mirza lost 3-6, 3-6 to hand Australia 2-1 win. The girls also play Chinese Taipei in their next league tie.
