Samutpakaran Thailand, Feb 23: Fourth seeds India were given a wake-up call by the Bangkok Asian Games gold medallist Chinese Taipei as they outclassed the Indians 3-0 in the second round-robin tie of the Asia-Oceania Zone I Federation Cup qualifiers here today.
Janet Lee, the architect of top seed Taiwan8217;s gold medal showing in Bangkok, was too strong for India8217;s Uzma Khan and beat her 6-2 6-2 in less than an hour.
8220;I played well but had problems in getting my first serves in,8221; Uzma Khan said later. India Number One Nirupama Vaidyanathan, who was expected to provide some resistance to Taiwanese counterpart Wang Shi-Ting, succumbed tamely 6-0 6-1.
In the doubles tie, Janet and Shi-Ting beat Indian pair of Nirupama and Sai Jayalakshmi 6-3 6-2. India rest tomorrow and will meet Indonesia on Thursday.
Chennai may host Davis
New Delhi: Chennai may host the India-China Asia Oceania Group I Davis Cup tie from April 2-4. The other venues shortlisted are Delhi and Calcutta. Since Leander Paes andMahesh Bhupathi are in favour of playing on hard courts, it is unlikely the All India Tennis Association will put them on grass.
Chennai is preferred by the two, especially Paes, because they will play the Gold Flake Open, the day after the Davis Cup tie, in Chennai. It is learnt the tie will be held under lights because the evenings would be much cooler in Chennai. The Indians will be coming in for the tie after spending about three weeks on hard courts in the United States, playing the two Super-9 tournaments, Indian Wells and Lipton at Key Biscayne.
If Chennai is ruled out, Delhi will come in as the second choice primarily due to the hard courts at the RK Khanna stadium. The final decision is expected tomorrow.
