Uttar Pradesh can expect rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning from January 22-26.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rain is expected to start from the evening of January 22 and last till January 24 owing to two successive Western Disturbances.

It is likely to subside by January 24. There will also be a slight drop in minimum temperatures by 2-4°C between January 24 and 26.

However, fresh rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning — and a slight rise in temperature — can be expected on January 26 as a new Western Disturbance approaches.

Affected districts

About 45 districts across western, central, and Terai regions are expected to witness rain, thunderstorms, and strong gusty winds on January 23.

Western UP: Saharanpur, Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Mathura, Baghpat, Meerut, Agra, Sambhal

Central UP: Mainpuri, Kannauj, Etawah, Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, Sitapur, Lucknow, Barabanki, Unnao, Kanpur

Terai Belt: Bahraich, Shravasti, Lakhimpur Kheri

By January 24, rainfall is likely to shift towards central and eastern UP, affecting about 18 districts including Lakhimpur Kheri, Lucknow, Sitapur, Barabanki, Rae Bareli, Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Kushinagar, and Deoria.

“Due to the influence of two successive active Western Disturbances, rainfall is expected to begin in western UP late on January 22 and become widespread across eastern UP on January 23. It will decrease on January 24; the weather will be dry on January 25. There will be a likely increase of 3-5°C in minimum temperatures during January 22-24, and the current relief from the cold is expected to continue in the state,” said experts at the IMD’s MeT Centre in Lucknow.

“However, minimum temperatures are likely to drop again by 2-4°C between January 24-26, before rising again with the start of a new spell of rain from January 26 due to the influence of the next Western Disturbance. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain above normal during the next week, despite a slight gradual decrease,” they added.

Experts also said the passage of the current Western Disturbance caused a change in wind direction and clear skies, leading to a drop in minimum temperatures in western and central UP.

They said in eastern UP, temperatures are expected to gradually decrease over the next 48 hours, but remain around or above normal, with reduced fog providing relief from the cold.
