Rajeswari breaks three records

CHANGANASSERRY: AP’s V Raja Rajeshwari broke three National records in the women’s 56-kg class at the 7th Federation Cup Powerlifting Championship at the Municipal Town Hall here on Friday.

Her new marks were in the squat 180 (old record 165 kgs, set by Madhumati Khatke in 1995), bench press 90 (OR 82.5 kgs, Uma Jadhav in 1997) and in the combined total 432.50 (OR 405 kgs, Madhumati in 1995).

She improved upon Maharshtra’s Madhumati Khatke’s three-year-old mark of 165 kgs, with an effort of 180 kgs.

Jockey docked

BANGALORE: Jockey K Shekhawat was today suspended from riding in races during the winter races of the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) till March 31 for not permitting his mount Parampara to run on its merit in the 1600m Horanadu Plate, the second race of the day.

According to a BTC press release, the Stewards of the BTC had also decided that if Shekhawat wanted to ride in the city during 1998-99 season his application would beconsidered only after October 31.

Cricket auction

BANGALORE: Memorabilia, `Auction Replay’, is being organised here on March 23, in aid of charity on the eve of the third Test match between India and Australia. The event being held under the auspices of Nettakkallappa Sports Foundation, is sponsored by Deccan Herald.

The memorabilia includes a pair of shoes used by Sunil Gavaskar when he led India to the title triumph in the World Championship of Cricket in 1984-85 in Australia, Eknath Solkar’s 1975 World Cup blazer and the cap Kapil Dev wore in the Test when he surpassed Richard Hadlee’s record of Test wickets.
