
Simi finishes 11th in British open
NEW DELHI: The lone Indian woman on the LPGA golf tour, Simi Mehra, shrugged off a third round slump 8212; she went three over 8212; to add a two-under par 71 to finish 11th in the women8217;s British Open golf championship at Woburn, England.
Defending champion Steinhaur 72, 70, 68, 73 made it two in a row by edging past Swede Annika Sorenstam by one shot. The American pro, leading by a single stroke overnight, returned a four-round total of nine-under 283 to take the top prize of 100,000 pounds about Rs. 72 lakhs.
Sorenstam 69, 71, 72, 72 claimed 60,000 pounds for second place. Local star Helen Dobson 71, 72, 72, 70, American Cindy Flom 71, 74, 69, 71 and Australia8217;s Fiona Pike 70, 70, 71, 74 finished joint third.
Simi, who was sixth last year, shared the third spot at halfway stage, after two successive three-under rounds to be six under for 36 holes. But the third round spoiled what could have been a great chance to finish in top three. However a finalround of two under 71 mean she finished at five under 287 and four strokes adrift of the winner.
Umpires8217; seminar at Bangalore
MUMBAI: A two-day all-India umpires8217; seminar is to be conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India BCCI at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on August 28 and 29.
The seminar is to be attended by the umpires on the Board8217;s all-India and Ranji Trophy panel for 1999-2000.
The three-session seminar, including two on the opening day, would be used to discuss points on Laws of Cricket, players8217; conduct and discipline as also other related matters.
India8217;s representatives on the International Cricket Council ICC National Grid panel, S Venkataraghavan and AV Jayaprakash and last year8217;s representative VK Ramaswamy would conduct the technical sessions.
The umpires have been asked to send their questions in advance to the Board which will be taken up at the seminar. Ruling will be given on the questions raised and decisions taken by the panel on interpretationsof laws would be final and should be followed in domestic tournaments.
Inter-State Athletics put off by two days
NEW DELHI: The 39th Inter-State Athletic Meet to be held in Lucknow has been postponed by two days to be held from September 12 to 14 next to enable participants at the Railway Meet in Chennai September 6-8 to reach the venue.
The 11th Inter-Zonal Junior meet will also be held at Lucknow, from September 1 to 3, Amateur Athletic Federation of India AAFI said in a release here today.
The meet will be the basis for selecting the Indian team for the Asian Junior Championship to be held at Singapore from September 30 to October 4, it added.
