Mongia’s catch adjudged best

VADODARA: Nayan Mongia can look back at the recent World Cup with some fond memories. The Indian wicket-keeper said he has received a congratulatory letter from The Daily Telegraph which published his catch against Pakistan of Azhar Mehmood off Anil Kumble in the Super Six match against Pakistan as the “best catch of the tournament”.

Sporting win

CALCUTTA: Mohammedan Sporting chalked out their maiden win edging out Port Trust 1-0 in the Calcutta Super Division Football League here today. Nazimul Haque scored the only goal of the match in the 48th minute by deflecting into the net a Joy Kabui pass from the right wing.

Meanwhile, at Siliguri Mohan Bagan lifted the `Sanghati Cup’ defeating arch-rival East Bengal in an exhibition soccer match organised to raise funds for the Chief Minister’s Kargil Relief Fund.

The red and yellow brigade lost the match during the ‘sudden-death’ as defender Sule Musha’s shot missed the net after a barren encounter which wasfollowed by an inconclusive tie-breaker.

Athletics meet

NEW DELHI: The Travancore Marathon and the National Athletics Circuit Meet will be held at Thiruvananthapuram on August 2 and 3 respectively.In marathon, athletes above the age of 21 and below 40 are eligible for participation. The performance in the marathon will be taken into account for the selection of marathoners for SAF Games.

Attractive cash prizes of Rs 100,000 for winner, Rs 50,000 for runner-up and Rs 25,000 for the third place finisher are at stake.
