Indian trap shooters excel

NICOSIA: Indian shooters, including Commonwealth gold medallist Manavjeet Singh, put up a brilliant performance in the trap shooting event at the World Clay Shooting Championships which concluded here today. However, they gave a lacklustre display in the skeet shooting event.

Manavjeet Singh gave his career-best performance of 121/125 points to finish fourth in the championship, a qualifying tournament for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Anwar Seth and Mansher Singh also did well, scoring 117 and 115 respectively.

Jeev jumps to 13th spot

NEW DELHI: India8217;s Jeev Milkha Singh continued his steady rise into the final round of the Italian Open when he shot a four-under-par 68 on the third day to move into the tied 13th place.

Jeev was eight-under for the tournament going into the final day, six strokes behind the leader Padraig Harrington of Ireland. Harrington shot a 68 to aggregate 14-under 202. The Chandigarh pro fired five birdies as against a single bogey tojump 20 spots from yesterday8217;s 33rd place. Jeev played to 34 in each half of his round with his only bogey coming on the 183-yard par-3 8th hole.

Jeev, who is currently ranked 21st in the Volvo European PGA Tour order of merit, is hoping for at least a couple of top five finishes in the next two months to get a direct entry into the British Open.

Indian women humble South Korea

CANBERRA: India chalked out their first win to finish third as they humbled Asian champions South Korea 3-1 in the Four-Nation Women8217;s Hockey Tournament here today.

Neha Singh, Pritam Rani and Manjinder Kaur scored a goal each for India.Earlier striker Alyson Annan scored two goals as host Australia kept their record intact overpowering South Africa 5-3 for their third straight win.

The world and Olympic champion Australia finished the tourney with nine points, followed by South Africa on six, India on three and South Korea ended last without any points.

Satish Kumar guides DAV to title

PATNA: Superb bowlingby Satish Kumar helped DAV Public School, Haryana to clinch the 15th All-India Sukhdeo Narayan Cricket Tournament defeating Delhi Model Public School, Patna by 26 runs here at the Moin-Ul Haque Stadium here today.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first Haryana scored 124 for 9 in the stipulated 35 overs match.

Chasing the target of 124 runs, the local lads were out for 98 runs in 29.1 overs. Satish Kumar of DAV was declared Man of the Match.
